Product Description
Applications of Acetylene
1. Welding and Cutting (Most Common Use)
· Oxy-Acetylene Welding (OAW): Acetylene produces the hottest flame of all fuel gases (up to 3,100°C or 5,600°F) when burned with oxygen. This makes it ideal for welding thick sections of steel.
· Oxy-Fuel Cutting (OFC): It is used to cut steel by heating the metal to its ignition temperature and then oxidizing it with a stream of pure oxygen.
· Heat Treating: It is used for flame hardening and stress relieving of metal parts.
2. Chemical Synthesis (Precursor)
Acetylene is a fundamental building block in the chemical industry for creating other organic compounds:
· Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): Acetylene is a key raw material in the production of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), which is polymerized to make PVC (used in pipes, windows, and wiring insulation).
· Acrylics: It is used to produce acrylic acid and acrylates, which are used in paints, adhesives, and plastics.
· Neoprene: A synthetic rubber used in wet suits and hoses.
· Solvents: Used in the production of acetaldehyde and acetic acid.
3. Metal Fabrication
· Carburization: It is used to introduce carbon into the surface of steel to make it harder (case hardening).
